In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to understand and navigate complex topics is becoming even more critical. This workshop retreat is designed to expand understanding of a range of relevant global issues and competencies. Issues related to population growth and the movement of people, international trade and finance, energy use, environmental impact, the spread of disease and hunger, and cybersecurity and artificial intelligence which all require coordination and cooperation that transcend national borders which make these topics relevant in any career sector. About the Instructor: Anne Linnee Following a 21-year career as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, Anne retired from the State Department in 2023. During her career she primarily worked on issues in, and related to, Africa and Asia. Her overseas assignments included the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, Mauritania and South Africa, as well as Washington, DC. Her final assignment was as the U.S. Consul General in Durban, South Africa. She has a B.A. in Urban Studies from the University of Minnesota and a M.S. in National Security Strategy from the National War College in Washington, DC. She speaks Spanish, French and some Mandarin. Join us beginning May 18th at our newly constructed Korean Village located at 10115 Sonamukkil NE, Bemidji, MN. Check in by 6 PM 5/18, check out 11 AM May 23rd.

Chinese One-Week College Credit Language Immersion and Culture Experience

Join other college students for a week of immersion in Chinese at Concordia Language Villages, located in the beautiful North Woods of Minnesota where our site is set against the scenic Turtle River Lake in Bemidji, MN. You will also earn one (1) college-level credit issued by Concordia College. Participants will build and enhance their language skills through small and large group learning activities, and by hearing and using the language - with the encouragement of our supportive staff - throughout their daily activities. By engaging in a variety of music, arts, sports and classic summer camp-type activities like campfires, singing songs, and more, students can increase their confidence and improve their language ability. These programs welcome Chinese language learners of all levels! At Sēn Lín Hú 森林湖, our Chinese Language Village, you’ll learn Mandarin Chinese in a fun, supportive environment, led by native and expert speakers who will encourage you as you practice tàijíquán (Tai Chi), take part in cultural activities like the famous duānwǔjié (dragon boat festival) and explore your creative side with cultural art like shūfǎ (calligraphy) and làrǎn (batik). These cultural activities combined with other methods of instruction will build your language skills in Chinese. In addition, the North Woods setting is perfect for participants to hike beautiful trails near Turtle River Lake, join together for an evening campfire, or even visit the Headwaters of the Mississippi River located in Itasca State Park! FORMAT: Language instruction through a variety of immersive experiences and activities combined with classroom-type instruction. WHO CAN ENROLL? Current undergraduate students. All levels welcome. There are no prerequisites. CREDITS: Cost includes one (1) college/university credit from Concordia College About the Instructor: Paul Faust Paul has been an instructor in Chinese at Concordia College since 2020. He has also been actively involved with Concordia Language Villages’ Chinese program, Sen Lin Hu, each summer since 2017 and teaches in the adult intensive Language Training Center programs. He holds bachelor’s degrees in Linguistics and Chinese Education and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. His study of Chinese includes coursework both in the United States and at Changchun, China. Prior to teaching at Concordia, Paul taught in public middle and high schools in Wisconsin and Minnesota. From 1989 to 2006, he lived in Taiwan, where he taught English as a Foreign Language, and later spent a year in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This survey course is designed to expose undergraduate students to, and expand understanding of, a range of relevant global issues and competencies in order to better prepare them for a range of career options (business, public health, government or non-profit). Issues related to population growth and the movement of people, international trade and finance, energy use, environmental impact, the spread of disease and hunger, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence all require coordination and cooperation that transcend national borders. FORMAT: 25 hours of classroom instruction over the course of five days, plus approximately one hour of light reading/prep work per evening. WHO CAN ENROLL? Current undergraduate students in any major. There are no prerequisites. Russian One-Week College Credit Language Immersion and Culture Experience

Imagine designing your own nesting matryoshka doll or Ukrainian pysanky (Easter egg); exploring music such as Tuvan throat-singing, Tchaikovsky and the three-stringed balalaika; or developing your culinary talents by cooking blini (crepe-style pancakes) or hachapuri (Georgian cheese bread). She holds a degree in Foreign Language Teaching from Northern (Arctic) Federal University in her hometown of Arkhangelsk, Russia, where she taught all levels of Russian in winter and summer immersion programs for international students for six years. She taught at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon through the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program. She is passionate about creating inclusive, engaging, and culturally rich learning environments that inspire students to communication with confidence and curiously about the Russian-speaking world. Adult programs provide more and more intensive opportunities for language learning geared specifically towards adult learners. Individual adults not attending with minor children may request an exception to this policy, please contact clvregister@cord.edu to start this process. All attendees, regardless of age, need to register individually for the Family Programs. Scholarship applications open in January 26. *Scholarships available!* Our two-week high school immersive credit program allows villagers to earn a semester's worth of high school credit in just two weeks! In addition to classes with formal language instruction, credit villagers can choose from a variety of elective activities, as well as classic summer camp favorites like campfires, music, a variety of outdoor activities and more - all in the language of the Village. These programs welcome language learners of all levels and give villagers the opportunity to practice their language skills in a truly immersive experience while also learning about local customs, culture and traditions of the country. Fully accredited by Cognia, credit programs include standardized curriculums, assessments, and transcripts to meet your local school system’s requirements. Please check with your school district in advance to ensure that credit from Cognia will be accepted if you wish to have the credit reflected on your villager’s high school transcript. High school credit sessions are designed for villagers entering grades 9 and up in Fall 2026.
