About the Village

Denmark is the birthplace of legendary author Hans Christian Andersen and is regularly recognized as one of the happiest countries on earth. Learning Danish at Skovsøen, our Danish Language Village, will be an experience you’ll treasure for a lifetime. You’ll have opportunities to sing songs and learn about Danish music. Outdoor activities include canoeing, hiking, swimming and Danish games such as kubb (throwing game) and rundbold (similar to baseball and cricket). Meals featuring traditional Danish foods like frikadeller (meatballs), smørrebrød (open-face sandwiches) and rødgrød med fløde (traditional fruit soup) will delight and inspire. Jacob Poulsen

Dean, Skovsøen
We’re excited to share that Jacob Poulsen has been named the new dean of Skovsøen! Jacob experienced the program firsthand a villager, credit student, and later as a staff member. Jacob is a Danish American who studied in Denmark and holds a degree in social studies education from St. Olaf College. He brings both outdoor knowledge and classroom experience to the village as well as a lifelong love of Danish culture and language. He credits his experiences at Skovsøen and with the Skovsøen community for helping shape him into the person he is today, and he is committed to fostering that environment for others. Jacob is eager to share his passion for the North Woods, the Danish language, and Danish culture with a new generation of villagers, and we’re thrilled to welcome him into this leadership role at Skovsøen.
