About the Village

The Portuguese-speaking world spans the globe - from Portugal to Brazil, from Mozambique to Timor Leste and beyond! At Mar e Floresta in the North Woods of Minnesota, we draw on diverse cultures and traditions as we learn the world’s sixth most widely spoken language. Enjoy traditional foods like top-it-yourself Rodizio de Pizza and Bibingka (baked rice cake). Learn traditional drumming, paint your own máscaras (masks) and hone your skills on the futebol (soccer) field. From the time you wake up in the morning to the time you go to bed at night, you’ll find yourself engaged in a variety of community and cultural activities, all geared toward listening, speaking and eventually even starting to think in Portuguese.

Our Location:

Mar e Floresta

Turtle River Lake

Mar e Floresta shares space with our Spanish Language Village on the shores of Turtle River Lake. Each space at Mar e Floresta is customized for an authentic Lusophone experience.

The entire Village is made to resemble authentic architecture complete with a traditional central plaza and fountain to highlight the gathering place for sharing a dance or song.

Many of the activities that take place in large group settings will happen on the plaza. In addition, there are ample spaces including volleyball and basketball courts, soccer field, waterfront with canoes and a patio for the evening bonfire.

Cabins are furnished with bunk beds and bathrooms with private shower facilities. This site is used year-round and the cabins are winterized. During the winter, one may also use the Nordic ski trails located conveniently on site.
