Russians have a profound relationship with nature. Here at Lesnoe Ozero, we celebrate that connection in many ways, using our incredible setting in the North Woods on the banks of Turtle River Lake.
Professionally trained naturalists lead guided nature walks where you might just see turtles nesting or deer feeding on forest grass. Students discover plant life that influences the Russian gastronomy, such as berries, mushrooms and cabbage.
Guided by staff, villagers use scientific inquiry to evaluate the health of Turtle River Lake, studying the macro-invertebrates that live therein. We explore the impact of ecological hazards such as pesticide and predator-prey relationships, both on our local community as well as in Russia. And, we even have time to collect branches to create veniki for use in our banya!
