Our Site: Mar e Floresta

Mar e Floresta is located on the grounds of Camp Minne-wa-Kan, a traditional summer camp overlooking picturesque Lake Andrusia in the Chippewa National Forest near Cass Lake, about half an hour eat of Concordia’s main campus near Bemidji. Villagers live in one of two fully-equipped cabins, Casa Lisboa or Casa Brasilia, gather for meals at our bandejão, and convene regularly in our activity center, named after contemporary Mozambiquan writer, Mia Couto.

About Cass Lake, Minn.
Cass Lake is located in northern Minnesota within the boundaries of the beautiful Chippewa National Forest, home to the largest population of breeding Bald Eagles in the lower 48 states. A variety of businesses and Native arts and crafts stores can be found offering traditional hand harvested wild rice, maple syrup, birch bark crafts, quill boxes and other cultural treasures. Pow wow celebrations hosted by the local Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) Native American tribe bring together traditional dancers from all over the United States and Canada, outfitted in historic dress and colors.

Minnesota is typical of a continental climate. Each of the four seasons has its own distinct characteristics. Although summers are generally hot and humid, it is normal to experience rain showers, thunderstorms and cool nights. Summer temperatures average 85 F but can get down to 55 F, so keep that in mind while packing!
