Invigning av den nya stugan Visby

och
Internationella Dagen

God morgon, Sjölunden! |
Morgonsolen redan strålar . . .
The morning sun already shines . . . |
Magda stands next to the new sign for our new stuga, Visby. In just a little while, the guest will arrive for the dedication ceremony. |
Here are some of the lucky flickor who got to live in the new stuga. |
The dedication ceremony begins. Christine Schulze greets the guests. |
The villagers are waiting for their time to sing.

We sang a beautiful Swedish song called "Den blomstertid nu kommer." |
The villagers await the dedication of the stuga . . . |
Bruce Karstad from the American Swedish Institute sends us greetings from Barbro Osher of the Pro Suecia Foundation. It is because of the generosity of Barbro Osher that the stuga was built. Magda presents Mr. Karstad with special Swedish name tags for Barbro and Bernard Osher who were not able to attend today. |
The girls who live in Visby presented a matta they had hand-woven to be placed in their stuga and a smaller one to be sent to Barbro. |
As they unrolled the matta, each girl spoke about her experience living in Visby. |
Now Bruce and the flickor from Visby go into the stuga to lay the rug on the floor for the first time. |
And this is what it looks like!

and now we invite the entire audience to sing with us . . .
framtiden ditt ansvar.
Du är den finaste jag vet!

Magda share the symbolic key to the stuga with Annika, Pia, and Kajsa!

Here is the plaque that was hung today outside the door:
Then we walked to the dining hall for a wonderful meal. The architects, the Mullenbachs, and Carl-Martin say a hearty "Skål" to a job well done. |
We were treated to a lovely song by the choir. |
Then it was off to I-Day (International Day)!
The sharing of the flags of the villages was part of the opening ceremonies. |
Here are many pictures from I-Day! |

For our musical part, we share the stage with the Korean Village. We loved hearing their songs, and they stayed to hear ours.

Now it was our turn!

S V E R I G E !!!!!

Skynda på!
Hurry up!
It is time for the closing program!

The theme of this year's I-Day was "Imagine." The final programs all reflected that theme.

Our nine-year villager, Dagmar, and seven-year villager Tyra introduced our dean Magda.

Now, it was time to see each village "imagine."
The Korean village donned amazing costumes for our imagination. |
The Spanish village invited us to imagine in a different way.

Our idea at Swedish was to "imagine" the connection of
the old and the new.

We started off with a group of us in Swedish costumes who seemed poised to dance a stately, yet tradition folk dance. |
Suddenly, a noise interrupts the dance--as if there had been a "scratch" on the record. |
The dancers must accommodate the new, modern techno beat of Bass Hunter's rendition of the Swedish national anthem, "Du gamla du fria." |
We closed the program to thunderous applause!

What a great day of renewing old friendships and finding new friends, too.

When we got back to Sjolunden, we had a kräftskiva (a crayfish--and quiche--party)!

Many, like Stefan (at left), were pretty unsure about how to eat these little creatures.
Kerstin finally saw the meat.

So, Kasper and she gave it a try.

Others like Dagny and Åsa found playing with them more exciting! |
Kasper and Kerstin joined in.

Linda loves kräfter! |
Some new ledare joined us today!
The boys from Riksdagen welcome Sigfrid.
Welcome back, Astrid! |
All in all, I-Day var fantastisk! |
