Be sure to check back at yesterday's photos. We added many more!

Here we go! Today was a day of many "firsts"!

Our "phrase of the day" today was "fånga dagen" or Seize the Day (Carpe Diem)!

OurooOur

God morgon, flickor (girls)! Here are Eva and her new friend Svea.

Every morning we have "matpresentation." The ledare do a little skit to help us learn the names of the food we will eat that meal.

Two LEDARE (counselors) usually sit at each table to encourage using as much svenska as possible at the table.
Magda joins this table of girls from Ullevi.
We had gröt (oatmeal) this morning! Mums!
Elin (back for her 6th year) is our Credit Facilitator. During the school year, Elin teaches English in Taiwan.
This year Lena and Carina changed their names to Dagny and Dagmar!

Annika, back for her 12th year on staff,

sat with Amanda and Lillian at FRUKOST (breakfast).

This is the song we sing before each meal. The translation is "We wish for peace on earth and food for all children."

After FRUKOST, Elin took the Credit Villagers through a self-evaluation exercise.
Credit Villagers had to line up side by side in the order of how much svenska they thought they knew.
There was a bit of shuffling . . .
. . . but it looks like Elin thought they got it right!
The two week villagers got their CLV Visas today. This green book gives them a place to record their goals and experiences at Sjölunden. Angela shows us hers.

We have time set aside for an activity called "Gott och Blandat," when we do a little something different each day. Today we learned the alfabet song and about Swedish having three special letters: å, ä, ö. Then in our new CLV visas, we wrote down our goals and what we would like to do at camp this summer.

Hmmm . . . what might Cecilia have written?

The goals the two-weekers wrote ranged from "I would like to learn to count to 100 in svenska" to "I would like for our stuga to win the cabin cleaning competition" to "I want to live life to the fullest" to "I want to learn to sail" to "I want to make a lot of new friends" to "I would like to "I would like to go troll hunting!"

Wouldn't you parents love to know what your child wrote?

Be sure to ask your child to share the CLV visa with you.

The credit villagers get to have FIKA each day, which is a time to gather and have a snack. Here are Marie-Katrine, Saga, Jenny, and Nora.
Bea used the time to braid Mimmi's hair.

Nisse used the time to catch up with Annika, who teaches kindergarten in Wayzata, Minnesota.

Language classes started today. Each small group usually has two lärare (teachers). Here are Maja from Sweden

and Mia, who was once a villager at Sjölunden.

Today their group made a little book in which they wrote all the new words they have learned.
Martin's group played some getting to know you games in Swedish.

New staff member, Vilgot, also was a ledare at Lac du Bois for the first half of the summer. He will be at Indiana University in the fall studying music and math.

Here he is with Otto, who is 8 years old, and loves being in his cabin called Ishotellet (the Ice Hotel).

During fritid, villagers can go to our bibliotek and check out a book på svenska. Mikaela, who is one of our credit teachers from Sweden, shows us one of her favorites.

Kajsa, who has been on staff for 15 years, shows us a new book just arrived from Sweden.

FYI! We also have all seven Harry Potter books på svenska, of course!

Dags att äta lunch! Time to eat lunch! Time for another skit to introduce our lunch menu.

Besides homemade bread and butter and potatis (see Åsa's sign?),

we also had green peppers (see Evy's sign?) filled with tonfisk! Oh, yes! There was also some yummy soup. Mums!

Here comes an impromptu plastlåda band (plastic tub band)! They come around to each table to let us know it's time to clean up.

Greta and Elli are sorting the volumes of "Snyggpost" delivered to the special "snyggpost" box Greta is holding. "Snyggpost" is "Ssshhh! Intercamp Mail," which villagers and staff can use to send a special note (på svenska, of course) to someone else.

By the way, have you written to your villager yet?

Today was a special day for Magda! It was her namnsdag in Sweden. We celebrate namnadagar at Sjölunden by singing a special song and giving the celebrant a tulipan (a tulip).

After lunch, the credit boys got to sweep the matsal today before tupplur (quiet time in the cabin). Great job, Leif! Leif comes from Canada.

After tupplur, we have INTRESSE. This is a special activity time every day in the afternoon.

While some villagers are weaving,

some are sailing,

some are playing soccer or volleyboll,

some are baking,

and some are painting using a technique called dalmalning!

Klockan är sex! (It's 6:00!)

Time to take down the flag!

One more matpresentation today! Liv, a ledare from Sweden, and her group used a viking saga to present the food.

Wonder who's behind the mask? It's Rasmus from Falun, Sweden!

Tonight we ate a kyckling and ris dish with salad, bröd och smör,

and blåbär for dessert!

Once again yet another plastlåda band reminded us that it was time to clean up!

For tonight's kvällsprogram, Martin and Gustava started out with a skit about a brother and a sister fighting over a toy (leksak). Their mama (Emilia) decides they must replace this broken toy.

So, each Sjölunden family group received a tub containing miscellaneous items. They were given 30 minutes to "invent" their toy using all the items.

They had to make sure their toy met all the requirements Mama Emilia had:

1. the toy must be snygg (attractive)

2. säker (safe)

3. stadig (sturdy)

4. billig (cheap)

5. rolig (fun)

What a creative activity! Each family came back with their toy so Mama Emilia, Martin, and Gustava could rate the toys on the 5 criteria!

When there was a disagreement in the ratings, the audience members got to vote!

A lot of lively discussion resulted!!

Check out some of the toys!

Here's what the Bernadotte family made!

Here's what familjen Kalmar made! It really worked!

How do you like what the Vasa familj made?

Mama Emilia was so pleased that she decided to buy all of the toys!

Trummor!

Drums!

Ett piratskepp!

A pirate ship!

Martin och Gustava testar leksakerna....är de roliga???

Martin and Gustava test the toys...are they fun?

Den här leksaken var både roligt OCH säker!

This toy was both fun AND safe!

Natti Natti...

God natt, Sjölunden!

Well, good night almost everyone except our baker, Ia, who stays up all night baking us the terrific homemade bread we get every meal. Tack, Ia!

Nostalgi!

The Weaving Studio is Finished!

(The Boathouse is nearly finished, too!)
