Meals

We’ve got five big tables in the “Savoy” cafeteria where we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meal time is one of the most important times to learn English. Even though you might not be able to speak English very well, you still have to ask for water or bread, so it’s important that villagers sit mixed with counselors and villagers of different nationalities. It wouldn’t be helpful to learn English if you sit only next to Italians if you’re from Italy, or Germans if you are from Germany. Here is how we sit at each meal:

-         For breakfast we sit with our street, all members are more or less at the same age and you can discuss the program with your street counselor or just talk about the last night

-         At lunch we are allowed to sit where we want, but counselors take still care about our English speaking. There are also one or more tables where only villagers are allowed to sit who really are interested to speak only English for the duration of lunch.

-         In the evening we sit with our “State”. States are special linguistically diverse groups that we were placed in at the beginning of Hometown in order to foster English at the tables.

So we are mixed every meal in another way, first we get to know each other better and furthermore, we learn easier English.

City Council and Fin Arts Council sponsored an English Program: In the morning at breakfast can every villager who wants get a “Medallion of English Mastery”, a nice medallion created by Fin Arts Council similar to a name tag. That means that he or she has to speak only English! Either they can make it till Lunch then they arrive five Homeys. But if a counselor hears you speaking another language, he’s allowed to take the medallion from you and give it back. If you last without losing till Dinner you’ll get ten Homeys. But remember: “Double or nothing!” If you lose your medallion between lunch and dinner you’ll get no money....

Meal Presentation

Before every meal there’s a Meal Presentation at Hometown. The idea is that the villagers learn the names of the food in a funny way.
Either some counselors or one of the school groups is supposed to do the presentation. They prepare it and show it the other villagers and counselors. There were already many funny ideas: One school group sang a song about Lunch, made a talk show or did a little acting.

The main thing of the Meal Presentation is that the group repeats all the words the actors say loud.

Some examples for food: Delicious fresh Swiss mountain water, fruits, potatoes, hash browns, salad,
