Programa de Crédito Universitario El programa de crédito universitario incluye un curso intensivo acerca de la civilización y cultura de Latinoamérica. A través de la lengua española, los estudiantes aprenden diferentes perspectivas históricas de países incluidos en Latinoamérica desde las civilizaciones precolombinas hasta el presente. Los estudiantes dan presentaciones, escriben composiciones, miran videos culturales, hacen entrevistas, leen literatura auténtica y escuchan a varias presentaciones dadas por consejeros de países latinoamericanos. El curso es enseñado totalmente en español. Los estudiantes mejoran su lengua por medio del contexto del aprendizaje de otras civilizaciones y culturas. College Credit Program The college credit program is an intensive course about the civilization and culture of Latin America. Through the use of the Spanish language, students learn different historical perspectives of countries included in Latin America from pre-Columbian times to the present. Students do presentations, write compositions, view cultural videos, do interviews, read authentic literature and listen to cultural presentations given by staff from Latin America. The course is taught entirely in Spanish. Students improve their language skills through the context of learning about many other civilizations and cultures.

Charla con Pablo de Argentina Pablo vino a una de nuestras clases para hablarnos de la situación política y económica de los últimos cinco años en Argentina. Nos describió algunos de los problemas políticos que han tenido, específicamente durante diciembre de 2001. Pablo came to one of our classes to talk to us about the political and economic situation in the past five years in Argentina. He described for us some of the political problems they have had, specifically during December, 2001. |

Charla con Ximena de Chile Ximena es de Chile y nos habló de la historia de Chile y cosas de hoy en día. Aprendimos de Salvador Allende, Augusto Pinochet, La Guerra del Pacífico, y también de algunos costumbres de su país. Ximena is from Chile and she talked to us about the history of Chile and things about daily life today. We learned about Salvador Allende, Augusto Pinocet, The Pacific War, and also about some traditions and customs in her country. |

Los estudiantes de crédito universitario tuvieron la oportunidad de usar dos computadoras portátiles durante la sesión. Las computadoras servían para buscar información para sus proyectos y composiciones, y para crear PowerPoint para su proyecto final.

We went to the library at Bemidji State University to find information for the students’ projects. Charla con Jazmín y Teri de México Jazmín y Teri vinieron a nuestra clase para hablar con nosotros de la revolución mexicana y la situación política hoy en día en México. Ellas son de México y tenían mucha información para compartir con la clase. Prepararon un PowerPoint con fotos, mapas, y muchos detalles. A los chicos les gusto mucho. Jazmín and Teri came to our class to talk to us about the Mexican revolution and the political situation of today in Mexico. They are from Mexico and they had a lot of information to share with the class. They prepared a PowerPoint with pictures, maps, and many details. The students liked the presentation a lot.

Charla con Nel de Ecuador Nel es de Ecuador, aunque lleva un tiempo viviendo fuera de este país. Nos habló de por que tienen una política bastante inestable hoy, explicándonos la historia del país. Con esta discusión la clase pudo entender un poco mejor los problemas con un país como Ecuador. Nel is from Ecuador, although he has spent some time living outside of that country. He talked to us about why there is an unstable political system in Ecuador, explaining the history of the country. With this discussion the class could better understand the problems in a country like Ecuador. |

Conferencia con el consejero del embajador de Bolivia |

Gracias a la consejera Sol, tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer una conferencia telefónica con el consejero al embajador boliviano a los EU, el Señor Raúl Barrios. Antes de la conferencia, cada estudiante buscó información de parte del problema de Bolivia hoy en día. Tuvimos varias discusiones en clase con Sol y entre nosotros para preparar para la llamada. El día de la llamada fuimos al campamento noruego a una sala de conferencia. El Sr. Barrios se presentó y nos dejó hacerle preguntas. Los estudiantes hicieron preguntas muy interesantes de la situación en Bolivia, los cambios para el futuro, y los deseos de varios grupos allá. El Sr. Barrios, con mucho gusto, contestaba cada pregunta, de una manera fácil de entender y dando siempre mucha información interesante. Nos habló por casi cuarenta y cinco minutos. Fue una oportunidad excelente para los estudiantes de esta clase, y algo que nunca van a olvidar.
Thanks to a counselor, Sol, we had the opportunity to have a conference call with the counselor to the Bolivian Ambassador to the U.S., Mr. Raul Barrios. Before the conference call, each student looked up information about part of the current problems in Bolivia. We had several class discussions with Sol and amongst ourselves to prepare for the call. The day of the conference call we went to the Norwegian camp to a conference room. Mr. Barrios introduced himself and let us ask him questions. The students asked many interesting questions about the current situation in Bolivia, the necessary changes for the future, and the wishes of different groups there. Mr. Barrios, very willingly, answered each question in a way that was easy for us to understand and always giving a lot of interesting information. He spoke to us for almost forty-five minutes. It was an excellent opportunity for the students in this class, and something that they will never forget. |

Gema Soy de la clase de crédito universitario, y me gusta mucho porque es casi una clase de historia, pero en español. Tenemos mucho trabajo; como proyectos, ensayos, y composiciones; pero no nos importa porque es una buena oportunidad para practicar escribiendo el español. También tenemos debates y charlas sobre varios temas en clase, y podemos practicar hablando en español. No es tan difícil, porque tenemos algo divertido a veces, como dibujos de El Nuevo Mundo y creando nuestros propios calendarios Aztecas. Este es el programa mas exitoso en el cual he participado, porque estamos entre gente latinoamericana, y durante el día hacemos todo en español. Es como una comunidad de chicos que quieren aprender el español, y nosotros podemos ayudar a otros. I am in the Collage Credit class, and I like it a lot because it’s almost like a history class, only in Spanish. We have a lot of work, like projects, essays, and compositions; but, we don’t mind because it is a good opportunity to practice writing in Spanish. Also we have debates and discussions about various topics in class, and we can practice speaking Spanish. It’s not so hard, because we do fun things, too, like drawing maps of the “New World” and creating our own Aztec calendars. This is the most successful program in which I have participated, because we’re among Latin American people, and during the day we do everything in Spanish. It’s like a community of people that want to learn Spanish, and we can all help each other. |

Vicente Nosotros hemos tenido la oportunidad de aprender de primera mano de varias cosas de la historia latinoamericana. Cuando aprendíamos de un país, un consejero de aquel país hablaría con nosotros. Esta manera de aprender es una oportunidad muy especial y nunca voy a olvidarlo. We have had the opportunity to learn first-hand about many things about Latin American history. When we were learning about a country, a counselor from that country would come to talk with us. This way of learning is a very special opportunity and I will never forget it. |
