These units are part of two unique partnerships, one between Concordia Language Villages and the German Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt -- DBU), Europe’s largest foundation dedicated to environmental learning and the other with the German Foreign Office and its Wunderbar Together campaign.
Together with the DBU we built an environmental learning center, called das Waldsee BioHaus, at the German Language Village site. Das Waldsee BioHaus was the first certified passive house in North America and winner of Minnesota’s Environmental Prize. It has become a showcase of modern Germany’s approach to sustainable living.
Participants in Waldsee’s residential immersion programming have hands-on opportunities to learn German through environmental awareness, as well as to advance their STEM skills in our high school credit session. These curricular units unite Waldsee’s content-based learning approaches to the environment and to STEM to advance greater knowledge of German language and a deeper awareness of German culture.
