Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for  STARTALK ARABIC TEACHERS Grades K- 16
Dates:  July 17 - 30, 2011
Location:  Concordia Language Villages, Bemidji, Minnesota


Description:  The Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century and principles of second language and immersion pedagogy serve as the framework for this four-credit graduate level course.  A residential program designed for K-16 teachers of Arabic, the participants will enhance their understanding of best practices in teaching Arabic through participation in language learning groups and activities at Al-WaHa, the Arabic Language Village of Concordia Language Villages.  The STARTALK teachers will spend the first week of their program in a series of workshops and discussion groups with the staff members of the Arabic Language Village, learning and sharing teaching strategies advocated by Concordia Language Villages.  The Arabic staff and STARTALK participants will then welcome villagers between the ages of 8 and 18 to Al-WaHa for a week of language learning activities prepared for them during the first week of the STARTALK program.  Content-based instruction will be highlighted in the program with discussions facilitated by guest presenter, Dr. Shereen Tabrizi   The seminar will be led by Dr. Salah Ayari, Director of the Arabic and Asian Language Office at Texas A & M University.  Dr. Ayari has worked with Concordia Language Villages for the past six summers as the lead instructor for the STARTALK Arabic Teacher Program.  He was a lead designer of the Arabic Language Village curriculum.  Donna Clementi, Director of Education and Research at Concordia Language Villages, will serve as the program director. Four graduate credits will be awarded for successful completion of the course. 

Program costs:
$1680  Tuition for the four-credit graduate course ($420/graduate credit)
$910    Housing and all meals during the STARTALK program
Full scholarships in the amount of $2590 are available to participants through the STARTALK program.  In addition, each participant will receive up to $300 to defray the costs of travel to Bemidji, Minnesota.

Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for  STARTALK CHINESE TEACHERS Grades K- 16
Dates:  July 31 - August 13, 2011
Location:  Concordia Language Villages, Bemidji, Minnesota


Description:  This four-credit graduate course in Second Language and Immersion Methodologies is a fourteen-day residential program located at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota, and at Sen Lin Hu, the Chinese Language Village, in its new location in Callaway, Minnesota.  During the first week of the program, teachers will participate in workshops, discussions, and teaching demonstrations at several of the Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota.  During the second week, the teachers will move to Sen Lin Hu in order to observe and participate in the language learning activities at the Chinese Language Village.    Throughout this program, STARTALK teachers will learn and practice strategies for staying in the target language, formative and summative standards-based assessments of students' commuication skills and cultural understanding, and content-based teaching strategies.  The use of authentic materials  to teach Chinese will be highlighted in the program with discussions facilitated by guest presenter, Dr. Ian Burns.   The seminar will be led by Donna Clementi, Director of Education and Research at Concordia Language Villages, and Ms. Rongfen Sun Burford, a Chinese teacher in the Bellevue (WA) School District.    Four graduate credits will be awarded for successful completion of the course.

Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for  STARTALK PORTUGUESE TEACHERS Grades K- 16
Dates:  July 17 - 30, 2011
Location:  Concordia Language Villages, Bemidji, Minnesota


Description:   The Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century, and best practices in teaching world languages will serve as the framework for this four-credit graduate course in Second Language and Immersion Methodologies.  The fourteen-day residential program will be located at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota, and at Mar e Floresta, the Portuguese Language Village, in Callaway, Minnesota.  During the first week of the program, teachers will participate in workshops, discussions, and teaching demonstrations at several of the Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota.  During the second week, the teachers will move to Mar e Floresta in order to observe and participate in the language learning activities at the Portuguese Language Village.    Throughout this program, STARTALK teachers will learn and practice strategies for staying in the target language, formative and summative standards-based assessments of students' commuication skills and cultural understanding, and content-based teaching strategies.  Simone DaSilva, a Portuguese instructor at the University of Oregon, is a guest instructor in the program.  Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, DaSilva is pursuing a doctorate in Luso-Brazilian literature.  Her academic interests include Brazilian film, literature, questions of gender and identity, and second language acquisition.  The seminar will be led by Donna Clementi, Director of Education and Research at Concordia Language Villages.  Four graduate credits will be awarded for successful completion of the course.

Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for  STARTALK RUSSIAN TEACHERS Grades K- 16
Dates:  June 23 - July 9, 2010
Location:  Concordia Language Villages, Bemidji, Minnesota


Description:  The Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century and principles of second language and immersion pedagogy serve as the framework for this four-credit graduate level course.  A residential program designed for K-16 teachers of Russian, the participants will enhance their understanding of best practices in teaching Russian through participation in language learning groups and activities at Lesnoe Ozero, the Russian Language Village of Concordia Language Villages.  Active participation in the Russian Language Village program will be accompanied by class discussions about the methods observed and current research on second language acquisition.  Observation, participation in, and analysis of a variety of methodologies in action at Lesnoe Ozero will help participants define their personal instructional philosophy.  The use of music to teach Russian will be highlighted in the program with discussions facilitated by guest presenter, Dr. Laurie Iudin-Nelson.   Because of the building configuration of the Russian Language Village, participants will be able to live on-site for this experience, participating in the daily schedule as observers and co-leaders of activities as appropriate.  They will also have their own classes to discuss professional readings, share observations, and prepare materials for use at Russian Language Village and in their classrooms.  The program director is Lara Ravitch, Dean of the Russian Language Village.  She will also serve as an instructor, specializing in content-based instruction.  Dr. Laurie Iudin-Nelson, Director of Russian Studies and Head of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, will be a guest presenter.  Donna Clementi, Director of Education and Research at Concordia Language Villages, will be the lead instructor.  Four graduate credits will be awarded for successful completion of the course.
