________________________________________
1. Staff members are employees and, therefore, representatives of Concordia College. Their personal example is expected to reflect the standards of behavior and the philosophy of this institution as reflected in this document. Therefore, it is expected that these policies will be observed and practiced by all staff at Concordia Language Villages. The staff is responsible for the villagers 24 hours a day during the program and thus must be constantly concerned with their safety, health and social needs, and serve as good role models for them.
2. Concordia Language Villages is fully committed to providing equal opportunities for all, without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, marital status, physical ability, age or financial status due to receipt of public assistance. The organization is committed to cooperating with local, state and federal government agencies in a effort to ensure equality.
STAFF CONDUCT: Personal Conduct
1. Staff members agree that while assisting Concordia Language Villages, they conform their personal habits in such a way as to reflect credit on the program, and to keep hours and maintain habits that enable them to function at the level of mental and physical activity required by the program.
2. Relationships between staff members and villagers that extend beyond a professional level are not tolerated in the program. Inappropriate sexual or physical behavior may be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program. In addition to and in accordance with standards of practice for camp staff, relationships between staff and villagers outside the program are not condoned.
3. Staff members agree to live in communal living environments, most commonly with villagers. No private rooms or bathrooms are provided. Maintaining a clean and orderly personal living space is expected.
4. In support of diversity of faith beliefs, each village conducts an on-site non-denominational Sunday peace service. Attendance is voluntary. While faith diversity is respected, converting others to one's own beliefs is not tolerated.
5. Concordia Language Villages seeks to maintain an environment in which tolerance is practiced for all individuals, regardless of gender, race, creed, color, sexual orientation, national origin or physical ability. Discrimination is not tolerated.
6. Release of information about Concordia Language Villages program participants is governed by the Concordia Language Villages information release policy. Staff members are expected to treat participant information confidentially.
7. It is the desire of Concordia Language Villages to provide a positive experience for all. Physical punishment and abusive language (e.g., swearing, threatening words) are not tolerated and are grounds for dismissal.
8. All curricula and supplementary materials of any medium produced by assistants while assisting Concordia Language Villages become the sole property of Concordia Language Villages.
9. Concordia Language Villages strives to support staff members using the Villages as a research lab for many types of research in the field of language learning. All research must have prior approval of the Concordia Language Villages administration.
Use of Tobacco, Alcohol and Illegal Substances
1. Because Concordia Language Villages promotes a smoke-free environment, the use of tobacco is allowed only in an area designated by the Dean. Smoking in the woods is a fire hazard and is not allowed.
2. Staff are expected to set an example of good health habits, therefore, smoking in front of the villagers is prohibited.
3. In accordance with state law, Concordia College and the practices of private, public and agency camping programs in the state of Minnesota, use or possession of illegal substances or alcohol at the Village site is prohibited at all times and will result in immediate dismissal. This includes arriving at the site under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances.
