Other questions?

1.    Do you have to be a current world language teacher in order to enroll in the Master's Program?

It is not a requirement to be currently teaching; however, the courses will be especially meaningful if you are currently teaching or have taught in the past.  Current and past classroom experiences give you a frame of reference for discussions and assignments.

2.    Is the Master's Program conducted in English?

Yes, the Masters Program attracts teachers of all world languages so the classes are conducted in English.  During your stay in Bemidji, you will spend time at the Language Villages located 10 miles outside of Bemidji where you will have the opportunity to interact in the languages you speak.  Transportation will be provided for these visits.

3.    What is the deadline for admission to the Master of Education program?

The program operates on a rolling admission basis. Review of applicant files will begin March 1, 2011 and will continue through May 1, 2011 or until the cohort is filled.

4.    What are the dates for the program?

Summer Session I: July 5-29, 2011
Fall Semester I: Sept. 1-Dec. 16, 2011
Spring Semester I: Jan. 11-May 5, 2012
Summer Session II: July 5-29, 2012
Fall Semester II: Aug-Dec 2012 (dates to be announced)

Total number of semester hours for program: 34

5.    What is the cost of the program?*

Tuition: $420/semester hour plus $22/semester hour for library/technology fee
Room and Board: $1,625/summer session at Concordia Language Villages
*Rates apply to July 2011 through May 2012.

6.    Where is the program held?

The summer session is held on the campus of Bemidji State University, Bemidji, Minnesota.  Bemidji is located 241 miles north of Minneapolis, 151 miles east of the Fargo/Moorhead area.  Delta Airlines flies into Bemidji.

Visit the Bemidji Chamber of Commerce Web site for information about the area.    Please note that on the last two days of the summer session (July 28 and 29), cohort members will travel to Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., to meet with the online course instructors and with thesis advisors.  At the end of the orientation, the cohort members may return to Bemidji or may leave for home directly from Moorhead.  The orientation session ends at 3 p.m. on July 29.

7.    Where do we live?

You will be housed in Linden Suites, a newly renovated dorm on the campus of Bemidji State University.  The dorm is configured into two or three person suites with a shared bathroom for each suite.  You will have a private bedroom space with a twin bed. Towels and bedding are provided.   There is wireless Internet.  It is very helpful to bring an Ethernet cable if you have one....just in case!  The rooms are air-conditioned.   The dorm is located across the street from Lake Bemidji.

8.    Where do we eat?

Meals are provided on campus at the Newman Center.  The cooks are hired by Concordia Language Villages and will serve an international menu.  A continental breakfast is served every morning.  Lunch is at 12:15 and supper is at 6 p.m.  Special dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice to educators@cord.edu.

9.    When can we check in and out of the dorm?

You can check in on July 5, after noon.  If you need to arrive earlier or on July 4, please contact us (educators@cord.edu) to make special arrangements.

You can check out either before traveling to Moorhead, Minn., for orientation on the Concordia College campus, or upon your return from Moorhead on the evening of July 29 or morning of July 30.

10.  What sort of equipment do I need in order to participate in the online portion of the Master's Program?

AMLA 610 and AMLA 612 are fully online courses! So, in non-technical terms, you need a computer that is fairly new (last 2 - 3 years preferable, 5 should be OK). You need to have internet access, and broadband or cable access is recommended.  Your school or local library probably has this if you do not. You will also need a microphone, headset, and camera (all can be purchased for less than $100). As for software, the standard programs on most computers should suffice (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel or equivalents). There is a free version (Open Office) that has all of these programs if you need them. Otherwise, everything that we do comes in a free version.
