Looking for Immersion Weekends for Dakota Teachers?

Given the very small number of First Speakers of the Dakota language in Minnesota, the University of Minnesota Department of American Indian Studies and Concordia Language Villages have teamed up to create engaging immersion weekends.  People from across all generations come together to strengthen their relationships with each other and their Dakota heritage.  Language is an integral part to living the Dakota way and we know that without strong and effective language preservation efforts we cannot sustain the Dakota way of life in the long-term.  These programs, through the generous support from the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council and the Legacy Fund established by Minnesota voters in 2008, target families in the hope that they will find new enthusiasm and motivation to continue their use and study of the Dakota language in their homes and communities.

The Dakota Language Intergenerational Family Immersion Weekends offer participants of all ages an opportunity to experience the Dakota language and culture in a community-based, natural setting.   The program staff is committed to providing the most intensive immersion experience to support participants in really focusing on and advancing their Dakota language skills.    Learn to speak the Dakota language with other participants centered around seasonal and cultural activities, such as:

  • Traditional arts
  • Storytelling
  • Games
  • Harvesting food
  • Cooking and eating
  • Songs

In addition to the Dakota Language Intergenerational Family Immersion Weekends, the University of Minnesota Department of American Indian Studies and Concordia Language Villages will also be hosting a Dakota Language Youth Weekend in 2012.

Comfortable lodging and delicious homemade meals are part of the Concordia Language Village's trademark immersion program.

Invite grandparents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews to gather together around the Dakota language.
