Learn Some Japanese

Did you know?
Courtesy is appreciated in Japanese cultures. When you greet someone, it is common to bow or shake hands. At Mori no Ike, we say “konnichiwa!” and smile at each other when we greet someone.

The Japanese alphabet consists of 99 sounds formed with five vowels. 

Written Japanese has three types of characters: hirangana, katakana and kanji.  Each has different functions and all are combined to form sentences.


Your family and friends can use these Japanese words when they write to you at camp:

Dear Matthew/ Dear Ashley Matthew/Ashley e
How are you?   Ogenki desu ka?
How is everything at camp? Mori no Ike wa dou desuka? 
How’s the weather?   Otenki wa dou desuka?
I love you    Ai shite imasu.

Words and phrases
These are common words and phrases you will use at camp::
Ohayou.おはよう。 Good morning.
Konnichiwa.こんにちは。 Good afternoon.
Konbanwa.こんばんは。 Good evening.
Oyasuminasai.おやすみなさい。 Good night.
Sayonara.さよなら。 Good bye.
Dewa mata.ではまた。 See you later.
Mata ashita.また明日。 See you tomorrow.
Genki desu ka.元気ですか。 How are you?
