Study Abroad

This program is open to high school students (ages 15-18 years old) who demonstrate language proficiency comparable to two years of high school study in the language.

Program Overview

This program is for students who have intermediate Chinese language profiency to experience China through varied interactions, locations and excursions over the course of four weeks in the summertime. Travel from rustic rural villages to modern metropolises offers an overview of the country and its current state of development.

Earn one year’s worth of high school language credit
As the program unfolds, students use their own writing samples, photos, observations and homework to create a graded portfolio of their language and cultural learning progress.

Touring Beijing
The program starts in the capital city of Beijing. In past years, students took part in a treasure hunt at the Imperial Palace and rode a luge down the Great Wall. Beijing is packed with sights to see. Plan now to attend next summer.

Settling in at Yunnan University
After three days of orientation and exploration of the nation's capital, the group travels to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province. Because all four seasons feel like spring days, Kunming is also called "The City of Eternal Spring." For three weeks, students stay in the dorms and have lessons at Yunnan University, located conveniently in the center of the city. Days are filled with language, conversation and Chinese cultural classes.

About Yunnan Province
Yunnan is China's most culturally and geographically diverse province. It also remains relatively unspoiled by the modern development that has enveloped so much of China. With a favorable natural environment and abundant natural resources, Yunnan is renowned as the "Kingdom of Animals and Plants."

Shangri-la Weekend Excursions
On weekends, the group explores the different regions of Yunnan. You might visit Tiger Leaping Gorge with views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Buddhist monasteries or interesting villages. Short flights out of Kunming bring our group to Shangri-la-like landscapes where local ethnic groups continue their age-old traditions.

Exploring Shanghai
At the conclusion of the intensive-language portion, the group travels northeast to Shanghai, China's largest city. Situated on the Yangtze River Delta, it is also one of China's biggest port cities. After two days of exploring the city and its culture, the group departs for the United States.
