Visiting Artist at Lac du Bois
As a visiting artist at Lac du Bois, the French Language Village, Nimrod Bena-Djangrang shared insight on Francophone Africa and inspired villagers through his expertise in writing. His published works include poems, novels and essays. He co-taught the college credit class, “Race, Gender, and Power in Francophone Literature” with Dr. Frieda Ekotto of UMI, leading the class through analyses of several of his original works. Villagers also had the opportunity to get his professional feedback and advice on their own essays and poetry. Nimrod's two-week residency with at Lac du Bois culminated with a poetry reading night. Currently a visiting author at the University of Michigan, Nimrod was born in Chad in 1959 and moved to the Ivory Coast in 1984 where he completed a master’s degree. He has published collections of poetry and founded the literary magazines Aleph Beth and Agotem. His most recent publications include a chronicle of critical essays in the literary magazine Africulture and a book for high school students, Rosa Parks, Non à la discrimination (Actes Sud, 2008); a novel, Le bal des Princes (Actes Sud, 2008); and an essay, “La nouvelle chose française” (Actes Sud, 2008). In addition, Nimrod has participated in numerous writing workshops with children and adults.
