Village Weekends

Village WeekendsSue Marshall, a German teacher from Phillips, Wis., has been bringing her students to Village Weekends for the past eight years.  She uses the weekends at Waldsee, the German Language Village, as a hearty supplement to her classroom instruction.

Sue adapts many of her classroom activities so they correlate to those done at the Waldsee, such as “meal presentation” skits or dances adapted from ones popular at the Village. “This year my Waldsee students brought back two dances - one was a line-dance to the song ‘Kuss die Hand, Schöne Frau’ and the other a dance to a techno song.  These two dances have been 'recycled' several different times.  One of the German II skits this year was ‘Dancing with the Stars’ – guess where two of the three dances portrayed came from? Rumor has it that certain Waldsee dances even show up from time to time at prom!”

Sue’s classes also participate in Waldsee’s Internet Schnitzeljagd. This year, one of her sophomores was selected as a winner and will receive a free two-week session to Waldsee this summer.

Waldsee is an extension of what goes on in the classroom and so much more. Students who may never have the opportunity to visit a German-speaking country can have an authentic language and cultural experience there. They have time to get a feeling for what life in a German-speaking country might be like and see that they can converse and get around in the language.  Many of them are inspired at Waldsee to continue with German during and after high school.”
