International Day 2018
Published: August 15, 2018
One of the most exciting days of the entire summer is International Day! All of the other language villages come spend the day with us at Waldsee -- nearly 3,000 people -- for a day full of fun activities and cultural exchange focusing on the theme Mut (courage).
We had an incredible opening ceremony with the camps walking in and around the Marktplatz in a parade and with speeches given International Day organizers and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar. What a cool and inspiring way to start International Day!
We started off the day with a fun song exchange with Mori No Ike, the Japanese Language Village, and Sen Lin Hu, the Chinese Language Village. We shared some of our old favorite songs like Wie Schön, and new favorites like Fahrrad Fahren! We really loved both of the other camps’ translated versions of Take Me Home Country Roads by John Denver, a favorite of many of our native German-speaking counselors!
The afternoon had a packed schedule, from the Model UN summit on the refugee crisis to the soccer World Cup to the Iron Chef Showdown, which the team from Waldsee won!
The Marktplatz was packed with games and tents from all the different camps. Campers and guests, for example, could visit the Lac du Bois tent for crepes or the Waldsee tent for coffee and our classic Schoggicroissants (chocolate croissants). There were food and drinks from all over the world, and even an International Bazaar where campers and guests could purchase T-shirts and other merchandise from all the different camps and candy from all over the world!
The closing ceremony featured another Parade of Nations, followed by performances from all of the camps. Waldsee’s International Day Dance AG did an incredible job in their performance dancing to German pop songs that matched the International Day theme: courage! The Deans of each camp and the Ten-Year Villagers were presented. Congratulations to Greta for ten awesome years at Waldsee!
Thanks to everyone who made International Day so special!
