Alumni Spotlight: Vera

Published: February 13, 2020

As we gear up for the 60th summer at Waldsee, get to know some long-time members of the Waldsee community! This week, meet Vera! Vera has spent 16 summers at Waldsee as a villager and a counselor since 2003. She has played a number of roles at Waldsee, especially when it comes to medieval storytelling with the Märchenwald (middle ages) program.

What originally brought you to Concordia Language Villages?

I wanted to learn Chinese as a kid, so my parents had originally sent me to Sen Lin Hu (Chinese Language Village).  After I started learning German in school, I decided to try Waldsee.

What made you come back to Waldsee year after year?

I kept coming back because of the wonderful people and sense of community, the genuine love for teaching language and culture (while not being confined to a classroom), and institutional support for creative pedagogy!

What do you look forward to the most each year?

I love seeing old friends and making new ones, as well as witnessing villagers make amazing progress with their understanding of language and culture (and seeing the meaningful relationships they form with each other. I appreciate the opportunity each year to try out new teaching ideas and improve upon old ones.

What's something that's different now than your first year at Waldsee?

The amount of/use of technology on site has really changed. Programs like Waldsee Digital (technology-based adventure program) have really taken off.

What's your favorite Waldsee Lied (song)?

Heute hier, morgen dort (so stereotypical, I know!) But  I also love Bossa Nova and Lieblingslied.

Best snack at Cafe Einbeck?

Even though it’s technically from Waldsee Cafe, I have to say Rüblitorte (Swiss carrot cake).

Sonst noch was? (Anything else)

My favorite Waldsee food has to be Paprika Hühnchen (paprika chicken) and my favorite Abendprogramme (evening programs) have been the Flüchtlingskrise (refugee crisis) simulation (totally biased because I planned it), Straßenfest (street festival), and Nacht der Wissenschaft (night of science).
