Alumni Spotlight: Katja

Published: May 21, 2020

We’re excited to begin our 60th summer of German language education, even though Waldsee will look a little different this summer! In honor of our 60th anniversary, get to know some long time members of the Waldsee community. This week, meet Katja! Katja first came to Waldsee as a villager over a decade ago and has been a familiar face around camp, whether behind the camera, at the gelato maker, or with the rest of the leadership staff.

Ankunftstag 7.17.17

How did you find out about Waldsee?

A friend of mine from school, her dad was a German professor, and he was talking to my mom about sending his daughter to Waldsee. My mom immediately signed me up as well, and we went together as campers for 7-8 years!

What made you come back to Waldsee year after year?

The food, the singing, the friends, and of course the German. Now that I'm on staff, it's for pretty much the same reasons!

Lagerfeuer & S'mores!

What do you look forward to the most each year?

Seeing my old friends, making new ones, and leading Gesang (song hour)!

What's something that's different now than your first year at Waldsee?

The Laden used to be in a Kleinhaus (small cabin), Berndts Bühne didn't exist, and we still had an "Eisberg" (iceberg) to play on in the lake!

What's your favorite Waldsee Lied (song)?

"Wie Schön"

Bankett 8.25.17

Best snack at Cafe Einbeck?

Sonst noch was? (Anything else?)

I was in Grüne Welle (nature adventure program) one year and it was a disaster. It was my second year as a camper, and I had no idea what I was signing up for. I basically refused to go on the camping trip and was generally a pain in the butt the entire two weeks.

Waldsee is planning to offer both virtual and on-site programming in Summer 2020. Check out the details of our Summer 2020 programming, both on-site in Bemidji or through our Virtual Village, here. Registration opens May 26.

Have you spent nearly a decade or more at Waldsee over the last 60 years? We would love to hear from you for a future blog post! Please fill out this form here if you are interested.

Additionally, we are collecting and digitizing photos from alumni in honor of our 60th anniversary this summer. If you have any photos you would like to share (particularly from the 80s and 90s), please send them to betreuerschaft@gmail.com.
