Alumni Spotlight: Jost

Published: October 31, 2019

As we gear up for the 60th summer at Waldsee, get to know some long-time members of the Waldsee community! This week, meet Jost!  Jost has come to Waldsee --  on various different campgrounds -- as both a counselor and a camper since 2000 and has helped further develop the Grüne Welle (green wave nature program). He has even worked at different villages, including Les Voyageurs (French outdoors program).

How did you find out about Waldsee?

My older brother and sister both were villagers in 1994 and 1995 at Waldsee Cass Lake. I was given the option to go to Concordia Language Villages when I was a bit older, and I knew immediately that I wanted to go to Waldsee. After only two summers, my brother and sister were singing songs and telling jokes in the language all the time when they got back. I wanted to be a part of that experience.

What makes you come back to Waldsee year after year?

Waldsee has been something special for me. I really have embraced the way the language villages allows its participants to experience the culture and languages with first-hand with crazy, goofy, and passionate teachers.

What do you look forward to the most each year?

I look forward to the time spent working in small groups on various projects to better the infrastructure or programming at Waldsee.

What's something that's different now than your first year at Waldsee?

Waldsee is fairly consistent with its message and content. That is an element that has brought me back over the years. You have passionate teachers and community members coming back year after year to be a part of the experiment and language learning environment. The most memorable changes would be ones I helped participate in. With fellow villagers and counselors, I have built elements at the Grüne Welle, repainted countless Namensschilder (name tags), Tischschilder (table signs), and signs.

What's your favorite Waldsee Lied (song)?

"Wir lagen von Madagaskar" oder "Wir lieben die Stürme"

Best snack at Cafe Einbeck?

I am a big ol' fan of Manner although I wish we had the Schoko Caramel Törtchen version.

Sonst noch was? (Anything else?)
Be it after a Langschwimm (long swim) to Grüne Welle or a Radfahrt (bike trip) to Chiemsee. Waldsee is best with a group of staff and campers around a campfire sharing stories and learning from each other and the nature around them.

Meet Jost and other members of the Waldsee community from throughout the years at our 60th Anniversary Alumni Weekend, July 17-19!
