A beautiful Juhannusaatto!

Published: June 21, 2019

A beautiful Juhannusaatto (Juhannus Eve)!

In Finland, Juhannus is a sign that summer is finally here. A huge element of this celebration is the Midnight Sun. On Juhannusaatto, the sun sits the highest in the sky out of all 365 days of the year. The nights are white. We may not have a Midnight Sun here at Salolampi, but that doesn't stop us!

Our Juhannus celebration started out with a picnic-style dinner! We had makkara (sausage), vesimeloni (watermelon), pasta salaattia (pasta salad), and mustikkapiirakka (blueberry pie) for dessert. It was herkullista (delicious)!

Enjoying their picnic!

After dinner, we had activity time. There were villagers drawing together, playing basketball, and enjoying each other's company!

Lauri Markkanen is that you?

This is when the party gets started! Villagers brought down the house with their dance moves.

To settle into the evening, we gathered by the kokko and sang some Salolampi songs.

A little slice of Finland.

Wishing you all a very happy Midsummer! Be sure to check out tomorrow's blog post for more updates.
