Foodie Friday: Munkki

Vappu is just around the corner and we have the perfect recipe to celebrate! 


  • 2 bags dried, active yeast
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 1/2 cups 2% milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 6 cups flour
  • Powdered sugar (as desired)



In a large mixing bowl, combine water and yeast. Let sit for five minutes.

Add milk, maple syrup, salt, cardamom, eggs, butter and half the amount of flour.

Mix with electric mixer.

Add the remaining flour a 1/2 cup at a time until dough no longer sticks to bowl and knead with hands (full amount of 6 cups may not be needeD)

Grease a separate large owl. 

Transfer dough to greased bowl and flip until dough is greased all around.

Cover the bowl with dish towel and let rise until doubled in size (30-40 minutes).

Punch down dough and transfer to counter.

Using a rolling pin, roll out dough until it has around 1/2 inch thickness.

Cut out circles using a glass or cookie cutter and cut smaller circles inside to form donut shape.

Cover donuts with towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.


Frying Directions

Pour oil into a heavy-bottomed pot (2-3 inches thick) 

Heat until oil is approxiamtely 350°F.

Fry 2 – 3 donuts at a time. (1-2 minutes per side until golden brown) 

Flip and fry other side. 

Remove donuts from oil and place on a wire rack.  

Once cool, toss the donuts in powdered sugar.
