Cabin Spotlight: St. Petersburg

Here at Lesnoe Ozero, each cabin is named after cities of the Russian-speaking world! This year, we will be featuring one of these buildings each month, so that you can get to know the diverse world of Russian language – and camp – a little bit better! This month, our cabin spotlight is St. Petersburg!

St. Petersburg is often the first building villagers see as they come to Lesnoe Ozero for the first time. The beautiful building houses Маринский Театр (Mariinsky Theater, our main performance space), рестаран (our dining hall), университет (university, one of our many study spaces), and библиотека (library, where villagers can play games and check out Russian books). The building is of course named after the famous Russian city, Санкт Петербург (St. Petersburg)! Founded in the early 1700s by tsar Peter I, St. Petersburg is Russia's second-largest city, behind only Moscow in population. It is considered by many to be Russia's cultural capital, and his home to the Эрмитаж (Hermitage Museum), one of the world's largest and most famous art museums, and Маринский Театр (Mariinsky Theater), the performance space of the world-renowned Mariinsky ballet and opera companies.
