Bienvenue au Lac du Bois! (Welcome to Lac du Bois!)
Today, Lac du Bois welcomed five families and around two dozen one-week villagers to our French Language Village in the early afternoon. They were greeted with enthusiasm at the border control to pass into a French speaking world for the week. New arrivals chose French names, opened a bank account, selected pass-times, stopped by the Health Center, and decorated their étiquettes (nametags).
Once everyone had arrived, cabins grouped together to make name signs for their beds, to get to know everyone, and to unpack. The half-hour before dinner, Seydou, our business manager, taught the entire group the dance to a popular song this summer at Lac du Bois that originates in West Africa. We ate dinner in pavillons (cabins) before the evening activity or the Veillée.
During the evening, new villagers toured the site, learning essential information about their stay here at the French Language Village. The adults in the families spent the evening with our dean, Chantal, who explained how the family session would run and the opportunities the adults have to learn here at Lac du Bois this week.
At the end of the evening, everyone came together for affirmation de la paix, where villagers reflect on values of mutual respect and the importance of growing as a global citizen. Lac du Bois’s affirmation of peace draws from values of intercultural relationships, equal respect for all, and positive encounters of diverse views among peers. Villagers drew from their hope and understanding to learn from one another when offering their own feedback. After this discussion, villagers sang the goodnight song, Bon Soir les Loups, and headed back to the cabins for bedtime.
To a week full of new adventures!
