Spanish for Professionals | 18+
Please check back for information on this program for Fall 2022.
What is it?
Spanish for Professionals is a week-long intensive language and cultural immersion program for professionals who work with Spanish-speaking clients in a variety of settings.
Who can attend?
Targeted professions include social workers, clergy, police officers, human resources and business.
How much language do I need to know?
The programs are geared for Beginner-Intermediate levels. You will be sent a language questionnaire that will help determine your language level.
What is taught in the classes?
The programs at Concordia Language Villages focus on communicative competence, and as such expose participants to real-life situations so that participants can learn through experience. We call it Living the Language. Classes will allow participants to learn necessary vocabulary while learning essential grammar for their fields. In order to try to accommodate a variety of learning styles, lessons are designed to use various teaching techniques such as Total Physical Response, lecture, question & answer, role play, quizzes, homework and client simulations. Classes are taught in Spanish.
What will I be able to do at the end of the program?
Each adult learns differently. Regardless of level, by the end of the week, you will have had an opportunity to work with a simulated client. You will gain the confidence to work with Spanish speakers. By the end of the program, you will have expanded vocabulary for working with clients from Mexico/Central America.
Will Spanish be spoken all day?
The Spanish language will be used almost exclusively in all sessions. Cultural sessions will be given in English.
What is the staff to participant ratio?
Concordia Language Villages offers, on average, a staff-to-participant ratio of 1:6. The small class sizes allow for maximum participation and teacher contact. The teachers are bilingual. As they have learned a second language, they understand the frustrations and the rewards of learning a new language. We know it takes courage to learn a new language and our goal is to help you gain confidence in yourself and your ability.
What type of Spanish will be taught?
The focus of this program is to help American professionals work with clients within the borders of the United States. As such the focus is on the language and cultures of Mexico and Central America. So, we will be using appropriate vocabulary and grammar for these populations.
What cultural information will be covered?
The program will focus on relevant Hispanic cultural information that would impact your ability to best work with your clients. Some topics will include the importance of the family, traditions, and the role of religion for the Hispanic client.
Is the program accredited?
Where is the program held?
The program is held in person at our culturally authentic site in Bemidji, Minn.
Who are the staff?
The teaching staff come from a variety of backgrounds, but all are committed to helping you. There will be a mix of native and non-native speakers. Some are licensed teachers, university professors, and/or undergraduate students. All have experience teaching Spanish.
